Fees, Billing & Insurance

At underCurrent Counselling, we are committed to providing compassionate, high-quality mental health care for individuals, couples, and families. We believe that creating a safe and supportive space for your story begins with clear communication about our services, fees, and policies.

Counselling Services

Counselling sessions are available online across Alberta. At this time, we are unable to provide services to individuals located outside of Alberta (whether temporarily or permanently).

Sessions are typically 50 minutes in length and are billed at the therapist’s hourly rate. While billing is based on session time, please know that your therapist also spends additional time outside of sessions updating notes, preparing for your appointments, and planning treatment—all to ensure your care is thorough and personalized.

Additional professional services (such as report writing, telephone consultation, or letter/form completion) are billed at the same hourly rate.

Our fees are aligned with professional standards across Alberta, guided by recommendations from the Psychologists’ Association of Alberta (PAA) and other relevant professional associations.

Therapist Designations & Rates

We believe clients should have access to a range of options that reflect both their needs and financial situation. All therapists at underCurrent Counselling are trained and experienced to provide ethical, competent care.

Therapist Rates:

  • Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC): $220/hour.
  • Executive Coaching: $150(Life Coaches are not licensed and are not covered by insurance.)

Our CCCs do not offer sliding scale rates.

Payment of Fees

Payment is required at the time of session. We accept:

  • Credit card (kept securely on file)
  • Debit (on-site only)
  • E-transfer
  • Cash (exact amount only, no change kept on premises)

A valid credit or debit card is required on file to reserve your appointment.

Clients are responsible for full payment of all sessions, including late cancellations and missed appointments. This policy ensures fairness to both clients and therapists, as counselling services are in high demand and therapist time is carefully reserved for you.

Our services are not funded by AHS or government grants—we are a private practice. Therapists are compensated directly for their professional time and care through client fees and benefit plan coverage.

If finances are a barrier, we are happy to discuss alternative options or referrals.

Cancellations & No-Shows

We require a minimum of 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment.

  • Cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice or missed sessions will be billed at the full session fee.
  • Late arrivals may reduce the time available for your session, but the full fee will still apply.
  • If you cannot attend in-person, we can often switch your appointment to an online or phone format to avoid charges.

Insurance providers do not cover missed session or cancellation fees. Repeated cancellations may require a discussion with your therapist about readiness for counselling.

Insurance & Direct Billing

As a courtesy, underCurrent Counselling offers direct billing to many insurance providers.

It is your responsibility to check your plan details before booking:

  • Which designations (Psychologist, Social Worker, Canadian Certified Counsellor) are covered
  • The amount of coverage available
  • Whether direct billing is permitted

Coverage varies by employer and individual plan. If we cannot direct bill to your insurer, we will issue you a receipt to submit for reimbursement.

Direct Billing Notes:

  • We can bill directly to most major providers (e.g., Alberta Blue Cross, Medavie, GreenShield, and others via the Telus eClaims portal).
  • Sun Life does not allow direct billing for counselling. Clients with Sun Life must pay upfront and submit for reimbursement.
  • We cannot bill NIHB, AISH, or WCB.
  • Only licensed professionals (Psychologists, RSWs, CCCs) are eligible for coverage under most plans. Student Therapists, MHTs, and unregulated providers (e.g., Certified Grief Specialist) are not covered.

We follow all legal and ethical billing practices. We cannot alter receipts, bill under another person’s coverage, or misrepresent services provided.
