About the Therapy Process
What happens in the first session?
The first session is about getting to know you, your story, and what brings you to counselling. We’ll also talk about your goals and answer any questions you have.
It’s not about having all the answers—it’s about beginning. Many clients feel nervous at first, but the focus is on creating a safe, calm space where you can be yourself.
What does consent mean in therapy?
Consent in therapy means that you are always in control of your participation. You choose what to share, what goals to set, and whether to continue with therapy. I’ll check in regularly to make sure you feel comfortable and supported.
Your voice matters most—you’ll never be pushed to talk about something before you’re ready. Therapy is a collaborative process, and your consent and comfort guide every step we take together.
How long does therapy usually last?
Sessions are typically 50 minutes. The number of sessions depends on your goals—some people come for a few sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support.
Do I need to prepare before starting therapy?
Not at all. Just come as you are. You may want to think about what you’d like to work on, but there’s no expectation to have everything figured out.
Therapy is a place to be real, not perfect. It’s okay to not know where to start—showing up is enough.
How often should I attend therapy sessions?
The frequency of therapy depends on the goals we set together and the pace that feels right for you. Many people begin with weekly sessions to build momentum, but this can shift to bi-weekly or monthly as needed.
Therapy works best when it feels like a partnership. We’ll check in often about what’s working and what you need, adjusting the rhythm together. This is a collaborative process—you don’t walk it alone, and your voice is integral in shaping the path forward.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. Everything you share stays between us, except in rare cases where safety is a concern or when legally required.
Billing & Practical Questions
What is the cost per session?
The fee is set per session (for example, $220 for counselling). This will always be made clear before we begin.
Do you offer direct billing to insurance?
Many insurance providers cover therapy with a Canadian Certified Counsellor. Clients typically pay up front and submit receipts for reimbursement, though many plans allow direct billing.
What payment methods are accepted?
Most counsellors accept credit cards, e-transfer, or online payment platforms.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
Life happens. A cancellation policy is in place (often 24–48 hours’ notice). If you need to reschedule, just let me know.
Is therapy covered by provincial health care?
In Alberta and most provinces, private counselling isn’t covered by provincial health insurance, but it may be covered by extended benefits.
Online Therapy
How does online therapy work?
Sessions are held by secure Jane video call. You’ll receive a link to join from your computer, tablet, or phone.
Is online therapy effective?
Yes. Research shows that online therapy is as effective as in-person therapy for many concerns, and it offers the comfort of meeting from home.
What do I need for an online session?
A quiet, private space, a stable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone.
Misconceptions & Reassurance
Do I need to have a “serious” problem to go to therapy?
Not at all. Therapy is for anyone—whether you’re going through a major challenge or just want to learn more about yourself and grow.
Will therapy “fix” me?
Therapy isn’t about being “broken.” It’s about creating space to understand your story, develop new tools, and walk toward growth with support. You are not broken—you are human. Therapy is about finding strength, clarity, and peace in your own unique journey.
Is it okay if I get emotional during therapy?
Absolutely. Emotions are a natural part of healing and growth. Tears, laughter, frustration, or silence—all of it is welcome here.
You don’t have to hold back or apologize. This is a safe space where your feelings matter and can be expressed freely.
Will the counsellor just tell me what to do?
No. Therapy isn’t about giving orders or telling you how to live your life. It’s about working together to explore your story, discover your strengths, and find approaches that fit for you. You are the expert on your life. My role is to walk alongside you, offering support, perspective, and tools—not prescriptions for how you “should” be.
What if therapy doesn’t work for me?
It’s normal to wonder this. Therapy is not a one-size-fits-all process, and it may take time to find the right fit or approach. Part of the journey is being honest about what feels helpful and what doesn’t. If something isn’t working, we’ll adjust together. Your growth and comfort are the focus—there’s always room to adapt, and you don’t have to do it alone.
